West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor arrested

JAMAICA: West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor is facing charges including assaulting a police officer after an incident at a bar in Jamaica. Taylor, who returned home injured from the Windies' recent three-Test tour of Australia, escaped starting the New Year in police lock-up when he was released on bond and scheduled to appear in court on January 12. According to police, Taylor was a patron in a bar when police ordered it to close as required at 11pm. Taylor, who has played 29 Tests and taken 82 wickets since his Windies debut, allegedly became abusive and matters escalated when police tried to place handcuffs on the cricketer. He was also charged with using indecent language, improper conduct and resisting arrest. It's an ignominious end to a year that started so brightly for Taylor when he skittle.

Notification on hike in power tariff withheld

ISLAMABAD: The notification on raising power tariff by 13.6 percent has been withheld due to difference between government and coalition parties on the issue.

Under an agreement with International Monetary Fund (IMF), government has to raise the power tariff by 13.6 percent.

The government had allocated Rs 66 billion for power subsidies in the ongoing budget with an additional allocation of Rs 55 billion after an approval from the IMF.

Sources said the tariff for lifeline consumers would now be increased from Rs 1.6 to Rs 2 per unit and for agricultural tube wells by up to Rs 1.5 per unit.

They said the government provided Rs 14.6 billion subsidy for lifeline customers and Rs 42.2 billion for agricultural tube wells.

Under IMF’s conditions, the government has agreed to raise the power tariff by 24 percent during the current fiscal year in three phases – six percent in the October-December quarter, 12 percent in January-March and six percent in the April-June period.

A 4.4 percent tariff increase was announced in October, and the current tariff hike of 13.6 percent will achieve the targeted 18 percent tariff hike in the two periods.

The government is also under pressure from the IMF to reduce transmission and distribution losses and improve the efficiency of the power supply system.

During the current quarter, the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) acted against 54,320 customers, including 28,200 reports lodged with the police, and recovered Rs 3.1 billion, the sources said.

Al-Qaeda threat looms into new decade, warns Brown

LONDON: The failed Detroit plane bombing showed that terrorism remains a "very real" global threat as the world enters a new decade eight years after 9/11, Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned Friday. World leaders needed to cooperate "urgently" to tighten security at airports and on aircraft following the December 25 attack in which a 23-year-old Nigerian nearly downed a US jet as it prepared to land, he said. "The new decade is starting as the last began -- with Al-Qaeda creating a climate of fear," he wrote, saying the failed bombing had "exposed an evolving terrorist threat" and highlighted "a major new base for terrorism." "The failed attack in Detroit on Christmas Day reminds us of a deeper reality: that almost 10 years after September 11th international terrorism is still a very real threat," he added. The Detroit attack, which has led to a major review of security procedures and the coordination of airline and other watch-lists, had thrown the spotlight onto the threat posed by militants based in Yemen, he said. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is believed to have been trained in Yemen before embarking on the failed bombing, with explosives concealed in his underwear which remained undetected as he passed through Nigerian and Dutch airports. "Enemies of democracy and freedom -- now trying to mastermind death and destruction from Yemen as well as other better-known homes of international terror such as Pakistan and Afghanistan -- are concealing explosives in ways which are more difficult to detect," said Brown. "Al Qaeda and their associates continue in their ambition to indoctrinate thousands of young people around the world with a deadly desire to kill and maim," he wrote in an article on his Downing Street office's website. And he said: "Our response in security, intelligence, policing and military action, is not just an act of choice but an act of necessity." Brown said Britain has "one of the toughest borders in the world," and had screened 135 million passengers in and out of the country against watchlists -- including the Detroit attempted bomber, who was refused a visa in May 2009. "But in light of the Detroit incident we all urgently need to work together on how we might further tighten these arrangements," he said. And he stressed that Britain cannot rely only on a "fortress Britain strategy" -- but must take the fight to where extremists are based, "in Afghanistan, Pakistan and all around the world." "The Detroit plot thankfully failed. But it has been another wake-up call for the ongoing battles we must wage not just for security against terror but for the hearts and minds of a generation."

Karachi shuts to protest Ashura procession attack

KARACHI: Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi nearly shut down on Friday as religious and political leaders called a strike to protest against violence after a suicide bomber killed 43 people at a Ashura procession.

The streets of Karachi were nearly empty. The stock exchange was closed. Karachi Transport Ittihad, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Jaffaria Alliance and several other political parties backed the strike call. The transport is completely off the road, however, private vehicles witnessed on the roads. All papers scheduled today have already been canceled.

Hacking GSM code is possible now German scientist Karsten Nohl

A GROUP of scientists claim to have cracked the security code that protects around 80 per cent of the world’s mobiles phones.

A German security expert has raised the ire of the cell phone industry after he and a group of researchers posted online a how-to guide for cracking the encryption that keeps the calls of billions of cell phone users secret.

Billions of mobile phone users around the world are at risk of having their calls intercepted and recorded after hackers broke the encryption used to protect 80 per cent of the world’s mobiles

But their work wasn’t seen as an immediate threat by the group that represents hundreds of GSM operators worldwide.

Led by German researcher Karsten Nohl, the 24-person team spent five months trying to decrypt the algorithm that prevents eavesdropping on GSM
networks.

According to various media reports, Mr Nohl said they had created a codebook that illustrates how the system can be circumvented.

GSM-standard mobile phones have long relied on an encryption algorithm dubbed A5/1. It is use to scramble the signal during communications between a handset and base station. This makes it difficult for calls to be intercepted.

He shared his exploits with participants at a Berlin hackers conference this week.

But in a statement the GSM Association said Mr Nohl’s discovery did not lead to a practical attack.

“We consider this research, which appears to be motivated in part by commercial considerations, to be a long way from being a practical
attack on GSM,” it said.

Over the past few years, the association has come across a number of academic papers on how A5/1 decryption but
to date, none could be used on live GSM networks.

“(The) A5/1 has proven to be a very effective and resilient privacy mechanism.

“By comparison, inexpensive and readily available radio scanners could be used to intercept calls on the analogue mobile networks that pre-dated
GSM and which did not use encryption.”
